When arriving to cover a recent elopement in Santorini, says Berlin wedding photographer Dani Rodriguez, of Bring Me Somewhere Nice, the first things to catch his eye were the whitewashed houses accompanied by blue doors and windows. “The houses are in absolute sync with the light blue sky and the vast Aegean sea,” says Rodriguez. “These colors represent Santorini; these colors represent all of Greece and they also match its flag.”

It is difficult to escape the typical images of Santorini, especially with a wedding or elopement, having been photographed millions of times in pure whites and sparkling blues. As Rodriguez puts it: “Santorini is such a beautiful place, a wonder of nature, and somehow outside my comfort zone, I would say. But the challenge was quite attractive to me, to photograph this wedding on this island in black and white.”

After all, that was one reason Australian couple Qi and Dylan chose to hire Rodriguez—they wanted something different. “Qi, the bride, loves black-and-white imagery, which is always a dream for me!” Rodriguez exclaims. “My passion for black-and-white photography has not stopped growing lately, and to juxtapose this style over the bright colors of Santorini was daring and exciting.”

The only thing Rodriguez was a bit worried about was the weather conditions. “It was February, and the weather was changing every 5 minutes,” he says. “We changed from a sun that blinds with the reflection of white houses, to a completely cloudy and black sky. The bride was also a bit nervous the day before, wondering if the photos would come out. I told her she just need to enjoy her day and trust me, and everything would be all right.”
