Calm Under Pressure, by Rebecca Yale

When Sarah and Kyle got married at The Adamson House in Malibu, California, the only downside for photographer Rebecca Yale was the traffic. “The bride and groom got ready in Santa Monica, which is normally only a 20-minute drive down the Pacific Coast Highway from their venue on a normal day,” she describes, “but with summer beach traffic and an accident on the road, it took us nearly 90 minutes to get from the hotel to the venue.”

That, unfortunately, ate into the majority of her photo-taking time, she says. “We had originally planned about 90 minutes of pre-ceremony portraits and ended up with less than 20 minutes for all family, bride and groom and wedding party photos combined. We absolutely made it work, though, and most importantly, the bride didn’t even realize that it was time-crunched! We grabbed drinks a few weeks after her wedding and she had no idea that things had run late or had been condensed! It was a very important lesson in remaining calm and that even if I’m feeling panicked to remain cool on the outside to keep my clients at ease and get the most amazing photos possible for them.”

One thing Yale really loved about this wedding is that it was so personal. “It was officiated by the groom’s brother, and friends did readings during it,” she says. “It felt so intimate even though it was in front of a large crowd. The gorgeous setting and shade from the tree on the hot summer day helped with that intimacy. It felt very unique and private in this beautiful garden right next to the sea. This is my favorite image [below], of the bride and groom on their recessional. I love the absolute joy on the bride’s face as they walk down the aisle for the first time as husband and wife, and I love the framing of the trees and guests and how the petals fall in the forefront of the frame around them.”
