It’s not too often you hear a wedding photographer say this about an event they just covered: “It was a perfect day.” But according to Stephanie Zakas, of Zakas Photography in Brooklyn, New York, Kate and Trevor’s day really was just that. “It was completely laid back, the couple got ready together—which made the first part of my day way more easy—and they were so much fun to work with,” says Zakas. “Nothing crazy happened during the day. Even their family formal portrait session was a breeze.”

This very intimate wedding, with only 50 people, went so smoothly that it might have spoiled Zakas. “I even found out at end of the night that me and the groom have tattoos of the same band,” she adds gleefully.

The getting ready portion of the day began at the Wythe Hotel in Williamsburg, Brooklyn; the ceremony and reception venue was the Bat Haus in Bushwick, Brooklyn. Says Zakas, “It was a pretty DIY venue. It is a co-working space during the day and then they rent it out for events at night. And I know Kate liked it because it was a nice blank canvas that she could bring in what she wanted. It was also nice and small and intimate, which is what she wanted—not a traditional venue. Her family came from England, where she is from, and she wanted to pick a spot that was not hard to get to for the out-of-town guests.”

One of Zakas’ favorite moments was wandering around Brooklyn with the couple and finding quirky spots to photograph them in. “I thought it was funny when her mom accidentally left the marriage license in the back of the building and had to run off to find it mid-ceremony,” Zakas recalls. “Naturally, I kept documenting it and she saw me taking photos of her running back and forth.”
