Wedding Photos and Portraits of the Week

July 18, 2020

Did you see our most recent Photos of the Day? In our daily series highlighting some of the most interesting images in wedding and portrait photography, the editorial staff asks the creatives behind the photos to detail the backstory and technical approach. Here’s what caught our eye this week.

A Special Kiss Between a Bride and Her Grandmother

Ste Walker was quick on his toes at this destination wedding in the south of France. The ceremony had finished and all the guests flocked to the couple to greet the newlyweds with hugs and kisses. Suddenly, the bride noticed that among the empty seats from the ceremony, her grandmother was still sitting, alone, up at the very front where she had been. She “hurried past everyone like someone late running for a plane,” Walker recalls, “and I ran with her. I had to quickly climb over some chairs to get close. She gave her grandma a huge kiss on the head and they had a really special moment together.”

Micro Weddings and a Moment Between Brides

Vanessa + Johnny, a photo duo based in Florida, have adapted to micro weddings as the pandemic continues to spread through various states. This image of brides Nathalie and Francine is from their micro wedding held at the Historic Walton House in Homestead. “There were only five guests in attendance during the ceremony,” Vanessa says. “This was a beautiful moment between brides in a beautiful venue. The rest of the time was spent exploring the grounds with the couple.”

How to Photograph in the Rain and Have Fun Doing It

Scott Stockton set out with dancer Emma Jacobus for a senior portrait shoot in the sun and wound up shooting in the rain. “We saved Emma’s dancing shots for golden hour,” Stockton says. “As soon as it came, though, huge, dark clouds also came out of nowhere. The sky started dumping on us—heavy, heavy rain. I knew immediately what I wanted to do, and it wasn’t to retreat.”

All Choked Up: The Capture of an Emotional Groom

Ash and Mick of MIKI Studios don’t see a lot of UK couples writing their own vows, but this couple did—and they brought everyone to tears. The bride went first, then the groom. “All the guest were emotionally charged from hearing Amy’s vows, so hearing Leon sent most people over the edge,” Ash says. “He is a confident guy and delivered each word clearly and with power…until the end of the vows. That’s when he started to waiver and his ability to speak was slowly fading because of the impact of his own words, until the point where his words became his feelings and he couldn’t continue. This frame captures the moment when it all got a bit too much and he had to take a break.”

Joe McNally on Lighting the Life of a NYC Breakdancer

Joe McNally photographed New York breakdancer Kevin Rivera in a variety of ways (as seen on his blog). “I spent some time with Rivera, roaming Manhattan and the Bronx, when I saw this neon in a store, and the glow of it, and asked him to lean against the glass for a photo,” McNally explains.
