Wedding Photos and Portraits of the Week

Did you see our most recent Photos of the Day? In our daily series highlighting some of the most interesting images in wedding and portrait photography, the editorial staff asks the creatives behind the photos to detail the backstory and technical approach. Here’s what caught our eye this week.

Portrait of a Ring Bearer Amid Wedding Day Chaos

Sophie Berard says this is one of her favorite wedding images she has taken. It happened during the toasts, and the entire wedding party was wrapped up in a lively discussion when, amidst the chaos of the scene, Berard noticed a little ring bearer sweetly sitting still. “His gaze really cut through the atmosphere,” she says, so she framed it all and took the shot.

Capturing Unconventional Photo Compositions

While most wedding photographers keep their gazes on facial expressions during first dances, Rik Pennington also had his eye on the bride’s gown: “Their first dance was a quick tempo, upbeat song, and I noticed that the bride’s flowing dress was making some great shapes as she moved around the dance floor,” he says. “I decided to concentrate for a few frames on the bottom of her dress, partly to capture the movement but also because I like to take risks and get something unique.”

Profile Noire: Celebrating 100 Women of Color

This passion project by Rhonisha Franklin (@rdione) of R. Dione Foto went on to become a solo museum exhibit, online gallery and coffee table book. One hundred women of color were photographed over a one-year period, each woman in three different ways—in profile, straight on and in what Franklin calls the “seat of power” pose. “Profile Noire is what happens when you offer Black women a time and space to be vulnerable and transparent,” she says of the project. “It is what happens when Black women hold space for themselves. When they allow their fears, insecurities, issues and problems to lead them not to a place of despair but to a place of power.”

Take a Break for Wedding Photo Humor at its Best

Tatiana and Ryan of The Brenizers knew they’d be able to mess around with funny concepts with this couple. On a walk in Cobble Hill, a neighborhood in Brooklyn, Tatiana spotted an interesting red door and implored a resident to let them shoot some photos.

How to Compose the Shot of a Groom Awaiting His Bride

Phil Salisbury got the chance to photograph the wedding between a member of UK’s Royal Air Force and his bride, who was beginning to walk down the aisle just as Salisbury captured this. “Witnessing Dan as he began to breathe deeply and his eyes started to close allowed me to compose my shot and wait for the magic moment as Aimee arrived,” he says.
