Have you seen our most recent Photos of the Day on social media? Each day on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, we feature a wedding photo or portrait that strikes us as one of the most interesting in its genre, and we ask the creatives behind the photos to detail the image’s backstory and their technical approach. Here’s what caught our attention this week.

SHEDDING LIGHT ON FACETIME PORTRAITS

Couple Anu and Raghu were photographed at their home in California while wedding photographer Rimi Sen took images remotely via FaceTime.

“With not much work in hand during lockdown, I started to explore the concept of doing FaceTime and virtual shoots, similar to what my mentor Sephi Bergerson was doing,” says Sen, who was named an Rf 30 Rising Star in 2019. “I attempted to bring my style and experience of photographing wedding and couple portraits into this. It was a desperate attempt to keep doing something but I ended up enjoying doing them immensely.”

For this shoot, taken on the couple’s iPhone and using the app CLOS, Sen says that Anu first took her on a virtual tour of her house and then Sen just experimented with some natural light in the couple’s bedroom.

PORTRAIT OF THE WEEK: LOOKING SHARP

Scott McIntyre photographed this image of his son, Ben, during a rainy afternoon in their driveway.

“Ben is so great with my photo requests,” McIntyre laughs, “and most times I just ask him to sit around and be himself as I take some creative images of him. I was actually testing my new Fuji GFX 50r with the GF 110mm F2 lens and just got so blown away by the capabilities of this system. We tested it in studio for a while then went out to grab some natural light shots.”

McIntyre says of the shot—which he describes as very much Ben—”I love the textures and the softness here, however the sharpness also blows me away. There is so much detail rendered with the medium-format system that I am glad I made the leap.”

ILLUMINATED BY THE DRINKS FRIDGE

This shot was taken inside a 7-Eleven in Singapore’s Chinatown, says Bottled Groove Photography‘s Eugene Tan HZ.

I chanced upon this spot when we were walking around and knew we had to shoot there. I knew the drinks fridge would illuminate the couple because of the CineStill 800T’s capability in tungsten light situations. I am really loving the cinematic vibe in the shot as well.”

LEAPING INTO ACTION

Juna Medan of Weddings By Jun in Malaysia took this post wedding ceremony shot at Tanjung Batu Beach Bintulu in Sarawak, Malaysia.

“Tanjung Batu Beach is a popular recreational and picnic spot for locals and visitors,” says the photographer. “I directed the groom to jump from the the left platform to the right one (a concrete bench). This was taken around 4.30 p.m. after a rainstorm and the sunlight was diffused by some cloud cover to create a soft light from the right side.”

FROM HERE TO ETERNITY

Taken during an engagement session for couple Brittney and Brandon in Miami, this image, say photographers Vanessa + Johnny, is a testament to how the creative team has been able to stay safe through the pandemic and still continue to work safely.

“I love photographing at the beach, especially now,” says Vanessa. “There is plenty of space and wind there, and it makes me feel like I can relax and connect with my subjects, rather than worry about the coronavirus.”

Vanessa says that during the initial consult with the couple, they talked about possibly going into the water after a few photographs on the beach so she brought her underwater housing with her just in case. “What was supposed to be a one-hour session turned into three because they were having so much fun.”
