After this couple’s wedding ceremony, Pedro Vilela took a few moments with them to shoot some posed portraits, but it was an unposed candid of the bride standing near a door that struck the documentary-style photographer. “I love the light and the bride’s beautiful smile,” Vilela says of the moment, photographed at Quinta Pé da Serra in Sintra, Portugal.

Getting this portrait just right also took some good timing. “This was the main door,” leading out to the balcony, Vilela notes, “so there were always people passing by—guests, waiters, kids.” Fortunately, the photographer captured a rare, peaceful moment that showcases only the bride and the groom illuminated by the beautiful light.
