This galactic-looking photo, you can imagine, had multiple steps to putting it all together—but perhaps not the ones you’d expect.

It’s an in-camera double exposure, Hiram Trillo says, taken in Cancun where the couple had gotten married. “I have always been a firm believer that images should always mean more to the people in them,” Trillo says, so during the reception, “I asked the brothers and sisters of the bride and groom to come outside with me and handed them each a hand full of Holi powder.”

He put a GEEKOTO GT-200 flash behind and above the couple in order to maximize illumination of the scene, and on the count of three, Trillo recalls, “I had the siblings toss the powder behind them while I took the shot, freezing the frame. After the first image was taken, I then waited until they returned to their reception and then I placed my camera on a tripod and took a second exposure.”

After some clean-up in post, removing stars from the couple’s figures, Trillo had an otherworldly portraits for his clients.
