Photography as Therapy in an Unsettled Time

Feeling like you need to be in therapy right around now? As we are all trying to stay safe and “shelter in place” during the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s still important to stay sane and practice some sort of self-therapy.

New Orleans wedding photographer Sharon Pye decided to do just that by taking the down time to photographer her adorable daughter, Ada, which she says has been extremely therapeutic.

“It’s been nuts down here in Nola,” says Pye, “and honestly, it was hard for me to pick up my camera these past few weeks but I needed to get out of my head and shoot.”

This image was taken on about day 9 of Pye and her family being stuck inside at home. “I needed to get out of my head and shoot,” she explains. “I took several photos of Ada and her dad bonding by the window. I loved how she was still her playful self. The images I took, and this one in particular, just reminded me to enjoy the present. There are several things I can’t control right now—or ever really—but I can choose to enjoy this very moment.”

For Pye and, I’m sure, so many other photographers right now, staying creative and continuing to photograph, even if it’s just in your own isolated environment, can feel like therapy.

“When I’m feeling lost or depressed it can really pull me out of it,” she says.

For Sharon Pye, photographing her daughter Ada has been like therapy during this unsettled time.
