Photographer Sara Fitzpatrick of Sara Fitz Photo had just started climbing rock scrambles with her clients on the way up to Eagles Watch at Mohonk Mountain in upstate New York. It was just after sunrise and the group had already made a couple of wrong turns, but it didn’t stop them from enjoying the misty, tree-filled landscape, and each other’s company.

At one point during the early-morning hike, Tommy, the groom, requested a photo of just him on a boulder cliff in “mountain-man style,” Fitzpatrick says. “I was all for it.” After taking a couple of shots and recognizing the beautiful composition, Fitzpatrick suggested the bride, Brianna, join Tommy on the boulder. “The scene was so breathtaking,” the photographer recalls. “I chose to tell a simple story of their love and sense of adventure through their individual silhouettes, holding hands and their gaze toward each other.”

While the weather wasn’t perfect and the frame was produced out of complete spontaneity, Fitzpatrick says this moment represents everything she enjoys about wedding photography. “I love how I was able to turn it into an artfully crafted, unique shot for Tommy and Brianna,” she says. “I think that is half the battle of wedding photography: thinking on your feet and making anything that flies into art.”
