During this couple’s photo session, Elena Lazuli, a photographer based in Belgrade, Serbia, noticed what she calls the wonderful play of “light and shadow” happening in this room.

“I knew I needed to make the most of it,” Lazuli says. “I asked the couple to play with their hands. They were connected just like the light and the shadow. Where one is, there is the other.”

Looking back, Lazuli observes even deeper symbolism in the moment when these elements inspired her to direct this shot. “Wherever we are, our love comes with us,” she says. “That is how we are always together, no matter how far apart we seem to be. This is something far more powerful than distance.”

For her, that something is, simply, love, and “this photo, in all its beauty and color, shows that feeling perfectly.”
