Let Them Eat Cake

Even though Steve Herrschaft shot this towards the end of only his second season as a wedding photographer, at just 18 years old, it is still one of his favorites. It’s one of ours, too, especially for it’s timeless quality and the capture of a different perspective on the wedding day that can often go unnoticed.

“On that day I was super sick and didn’t feel good at all,” says Herrschaft. Luckily I managed to get myself together and gave everything I had left until the very end of the wedding.” The photographer goes on to explain that during this cake cutting, he felt proud to “have had the confidence to do a step backwards from the obvious story, analyzing and seeing this kid. Why do I like this image? Because you can look right into the brain of this little boy. It doesn’t only tell you what he’s doing, but also what he is feeling. It was a split second, but it reveals so much. The framing of him even adds to the overall story of the image.”

(Shot with a Canon 5D Mark III and EF 17-4mm f/4L lens; Shutter speed: 1/160, aperture: f/4.0, focal length: 24mm, ISO: 2000. Lighting: On-camera, pointed behind Herrschaft, combined with MagMod warming gel on the flash.)
