What better day to post a cake shot than today, when many of us will be stuffing our own faces with our favorite Thanksgiving fixings?

Austin, Texas-based photographer John David Swiger was ready for this moment, he says, especially because these two were one of the funnest couples he’s photographed. “Their lighthearted attitude made the whole day seem effortless, and I knew that Melanie or Alex were going to do something silly.”

It’s hard to tell in the photo, but the curtain behind them was actually sheer and just barely covered a wall of lights. “Normally I would have just used the available light and a high ISO for the photo,” Swiger notes, but “the lights were LED and it made the lighting unpredictable, so I had to use my flash.” The photographer zoomed to 80mm and aimed his Canon Speedlite directly at the couple as the bride smushed a piece of cake onto her groom’s nose. “This effect gives the photo an old-fashioned look with a natural vignette.”
