Cutting Through the Fog

When it comes to weird weather, we’ve heard of areas like Ireland, London and Paris keeping photographers on their toes, but in Dallas, Texas—less so. That said, Bradford Martens, who’s based in the area, knew that Mother Nature there can be equally unpredictable.

As he was getting ready to shoot this couple’s wedding on an unusally overcast, “super rainy” day, Martens invited the bride and groom to his studio for a session shielded from the torrents. “We blacked out our cyclorama wall and brought in a fog machine to bring some drama and depth to the image,” he recalls.

The goal, obviously, was to get some amazing portraits, but Martens was also keenly aware that he should amp them up a little after the rain had dampened the mood a bit. “We cranked up the music and threw down on a little dance party in between shots,” he says. “We closed out the set with this image by turning on one of their favorite slow songs and captured them swaying and dancing so sweetly with smiles all around. Our whole process isn’t just about getting amazing imagery, but also about creating scenes and space for our couples to be able to embrace and revel in the moment together.”

With a video light set up behind them, Martens particularly loved the way it cut through the fog.
