Composition On the Fly

Photographer Alex Miller met this couple at 6 a.m. in Paris for their pre-wedding shoot at the iconic Eiffel Tower. Unfortunately, the film crew for Mission: Impossible—Fallout had beaten them to the location and blocked off the entire area for filming. “After seeing the trailer, I could tell they pretty much used the same composition that I was going for! It was a bit of a blow after all that effort,” Miller says.

But that’s okay—he embraced the challenge of creating picturesque wedding portraits in less-recognizable locations across the city. One of them was this fountain.

“I spotted the fountain, and the symmetry of it all appealed to me immediately,” Miller says. He asked the couple to walk toward the light as he positioned himself on a grass hill on the other side. “I took a burst of shots of the couple as they walked,” he says. “To be honest, I didn’t even realize that the bird had flown into the frame until reviewing the image on the plane on my way home. But when I spotted it, my face lit up because for me, it’s the cherry on top and balances the off-center positioning of the couple almost perfectly. I definitely got lucky!”
