Bridging the Frame with Black and White

There was only a light snow coming down when this couple arrived at the top of the Sea to Sky Gondola in Squamish, British Columbia, but as they walked over the suspension bridge, the snow began to thicken dramatically, say photographers Michaela and Tim of Michaela Joy Photography, who were standing near the visitors center at the gondola to capture this portrait.

Fortunately, the snow didn’t stop the photographers from focusing in on the couple and creating a frame that went on to win first place in Rf‘s 2018 Wedding competition. However, as the photographers were busy making sure their equipment stayed dry, they may have overlooked the beauty of the umbrella, until editing the photo in post. “The umbrella is our favorite part of the photo,” says Tim. “Once we saw the photograph in black and white, it provided the framing and contrast to make this image stand out.”

(Captured using a Nikon D750 and the NIKKOR 35mm 1.4.)
