A Tighter Frame

Vancouver-based photographer Nhi Le has two brands, one for weddings (Noyo Creative) and one for architecture (Highline West). Specializing in these two, he says, “provides a wonderful synergy,” as evidenced by the composition of this couple’s portrait, captured at a circular parkade in British Columbia.

“I gravitate towards buildings with clean lines, symmetry and architecturally aesthetic backdrops,” Le says, so when he’s shooting engagement or wedding sessions, he tries to incorporate these elements into his work as well. For this portrait, Le avoided the urge to shoot wide like he’s done in the past (you can see his previous portraits in this location here and here) and instead provided a more macro perspective of the blue structure. “It can be challenging to provide a fresh take on a highly photographed location, so I used a longer lens this time to scan for the best composition, as opposed to using the standard wide-angle lens,” he explains.

In the end, his tighter framing paid off: “The couple in the window pops out against the dark background of the inner parkade structure, and I love how Mitzi, the bride-to-be, has her hand up to her face, genuinely smiling and admiring her fiancé, Will.”
