Henri Cartier-Bresson: 95 Images Highlighting 6 Decades Up for Auction

December 9, 2021

By Hillary K. Grigonis

A collection of 95 Henri Cartier-Bresson images were listed for auction at Sotheby’s today. The collection, which will also be on display for public viewing until December 16, includes both some of his more popular documentary work as well as some of his lesser-known portraits.

The images are from the collection of Peter Fetterman, a gallerist and collector, as well as a friend of Cartier-Bresson. Sotheby’s says that Fetterman obtained most of the images from the photographer himself. Along with the public auction from Dec. 9-16, the images will be available for viewing at the Sotheby’s York Avenue gallery in New York City.

The collection of Henri Cartier-Bresson images include some of the photographer’s more recognizable work, including Behind the Gare Saint Lazare, Paris and Siphnos, Greece. The 95 images include Cartier-Bresson’s images of people in motion, children and daily life. Some of the images in the auction were published in Harper’s Bazaar and LIFE magazine, among other lauded publications. His more popular work has already received bids of $12,000, while others are estimated to sell for a few thousand dollars.

Cartier-Bresson was known for his documentary style. Many believe his work helped shape modern street photography. His first book translates into The Decisive Moment, a term that’s now a regular part of the photography lexicon. Much of his work reflects that phrase, where precise timing was integral to the shot’s allure.

A French native, Cartier-Bresson studied painting before diving into photography with the purchase of a Leica in 1932. He was taken prisoner by the Germans in World War II and spent nearly three years as a prisoner of war before escaping in 1943, after which he worked helping other POWs.

Following the war, he spent several years traveling while working for publications like Harper’s BazaarLIFEMan and Machine, Reader’s Digest and others. His work was also regularly shown in galleries, and he authored several books. The photographer was a co-founder of Magnum Photos. He died in 2004 at age 95.

The auction of Cartier-Bresson images at Sotheby’s continues through December 16, with a Saturday-Wednesday exhibition.
