A somewhat surreal-looking, and humorous, iPhone photo of a seagull about to snap down on a french fry as big as its mouth is currently gracing Google billboards in England and Ireland with the tagline “What are you searching for this summer?” Interestingly, the photograph recently snapped up by the tech giant is a spur-of-the-moment shot from a series of photos that Hannah Huxford, a car salesperson and hobbyist photographer, captured ten years ago with her iPhone 3 while on vacation with her husband.

The minute Huxford posted this photo to Instagram, it went viral. Ten years later, after she re-posted it, it caught the attention of Google. © Hannah Huxford

Huxford, who studied photography at Sandwell College but now works as a car salesperson, was on holiday in Bridlington, a town on the Yorkshire coast in the United Kingdom, eating chips (fries, in the American vernacular) with her husband Ed while a seagull sat nearby and begged for a handout.

“These seagulls were crazy for the chips,” says Huxford, “and this one seagull was really hungry so my husband was feeding him chips and I started taking photographs of it on my iPhone 3. It just so happened this incredible shot emerged, taken as the seagull flipped the chip in the air.”

Hxford says it was perfectly timed as the seagull flipped the fry into the air, mouth wide open about to close around the food. The photographer shared the shot on her Instagram account, it went viral and the BBC picked it up and featured it on TV and in several magazines. It was also licensed for the front cover of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival brochure at the time.

Earlier this year, Huxford decided to re-share the image on her Instagram, @dreamwalls. That’s when creative agency Uncommon London reached out requesting to license the image. At first, Huxford says she thought it was spam and ignored the message. When they reached out again, this time via email, however, she realized the request was legitimate and later learned the license was for Google. The tech giant licensed the image to use on billboards for 30 days in England and Ireland and for 12 months online.

In our minds, the story not only illustrates the importance of timing but also highlights the idea that fancy gear isn’t always a requirement, even for a Google billboard photo. That iPhone 3 f Huxford’s had just a three-megapixel rear camera. Nevertheless, the cheeky moment was enough to grab even the attention of Google.
