Fujifilm Pro 400H Color Negative Film Discontinued

January 15, 2021

Sad news for wedding and portrait photographers who shoot with film: Fujifilm Pro 400H color negative film, in both 35mm and 120 formats, is being discontinued. The company says it is no long able to obtain the raw materials needed to keep making the film, especially during the pandemic.

As first reported on The Phoblographer late last night, Fujifilm’s discontinuation notice states, in part, the following:

“FUJIFILM PRO 400H film is a unique product that is coated with a fourth layer requiring specialized raw materials and chemicals. As it has become increasingly difficult to procure the raw materials needed to produce PRO 400H, Fujifilm has made the difficult business decision to discontinue PRO 400H.

When it comes to wedding photography in particular, Fujifilm Pro 400H has proven to be one of two of the most popular film stocks out there, the other being Kodak Portra 400.

Rangefinder published a story last summer on wedding photographer Victoria Delgado about falling in love with film photography again and how her renewed passion for film leaned heavily on both of those films. “Both work well outside as well as indoors,” she told us at the time. “I tend to gravitate towards Fujifilm more because in my experience, this film is more diverse when it comes to photographing all skin types.” She said she also fell for the highly versatile film’s “soft, neutral pastel colors” it was able to produce.

The discontinuation, according to Fujifilm, applies only to the following products: 135 PRO 400H EC NP 36EX 1 and 120 PRO 400 H EP EC 12EX NP 5.

“Based on recent customer demand, we anticipate that we will be able to allocate PRO 400H 120 film through the end of 2021. The production and sale of PRO 400H 135 will cease immediately, January 14, 2021.”

AdoramaAmazon and B&H still have supplies of the Pro 400H available in 35mm and 120 formats, but after Fujifilm’s announcement, it will most likely run out fast.
