Updated 08/02/21: On July 22, Capture One released a new update (version 14.3.0) that made a fundamental change to how some users were working with the application. It removed the Output Tab and replaced it with the Exporter, which has apparently broken the workflows for many pro photographers and digital technicians. Capture One recently posted an apology note on its website. “As we continue to listen to our community’s feedback, we hope that this will guide us in our future endeavors to deliver the best solutions to fulfill the needs of loyal customers,” wrote the company. While an export that has begun can still be canceled, changes to the system have made it impossible to pause and resume an ongoing export, but Capture One says that it will provide this functionality in an upcoming release.

Capture One Pro, the photo editing software known for its RAW processing and excellent tethering features, has news worth mentioning: Recent Capture One Pro 21 (14.3.0, for MAC OS) updates include a new masking tool—the Magic Brush—as well as several other improvements and camera/lens support.

This new tool expands Capture One Pro 21’s masking capabilities and makes it easier (and faster) to create complex masks. Instead of just relying on color and/or brightness, the Magic Brush also takes into account proximity of pixels. Adjustment variables of the Magic Brush include brush size, opacity, tolerance, refine edge and whether or not to sample the entire photo. Variables can be changed, of course, for each brush stroke within the same image so you can, for example, adjust the tolerance or refine edge (you can also access Capture One’s refine mask tool) based on the areas you are masking.

Right now the Magic Brush is additive only so if you (or the brush) accidentally go outside the bounds of what you’re masking, you’ll need to use the Eraser tool or the Undo function to fine tune the mask and get rid of the unwanted pixels.

Keep in mind that there were a few changes in the interface to make room for the Magic Brush tool. And Capture One has moved the Mask Visibility Tool to the top of the viewer.

Improvements have also been made to the Exporter.

Capture One has also made some improvements in the Exporter as part of the update. While all the same functionality is there, options are now consolidated into a single dialogue box to streamline your workflow. For example, the Exporter contains all recipes, a location tool so you can decide where your photo will be exported to, and more. And, Capture One has added some new functions such as a proofing viewer so you can eyeball the image before exporting. (Just be sure to check “show all options” before starting the process.) You can also overwrite existing files during export, if you choose to. For a Quick Export, there’s an option to use previous settings.

Catalogue improvements include the ability to view images in subfolders and synchronize new subfolders into catalogues. The latter synchronize function offers two new options: one allows you to “include subfolders” or “only include previously added subfolders” to keep your catalogues and hard drives in synch.

In addition to the standard new camera and lens support, Capture One Pro 21 now gives Fuji users the ability to trigger an exposure in live view when shooting tethered. And “nudge focus” in live view is now available for certain Leica cameras.
