Two Fast Zooms For Canon Mirrorless

September 6, 2019

The latest full-frame lenses from Canon are two zooms with a bright, constant aperture: the RF 15-35mm F2.8 L IS USM wide-angle and the RF 24-70mm F2.8 L IS USM standard zoom. There are currently only two cameras in the RF Mount line, however, the Canon EOS R and the Canon EOS RP.

Canon’s RF Mount line has smaller, more compact cameras and lenses thanks to the shortened distance between the back of the lens and the sensor.

With these two new lens models, and a third due for arrival this September, the RF 70-200mm F2.8 L IS USM telephoto, there will be a total of seven lenses in the current RF Mount line.

The RF Mount lenses have a new design. Like focus and zooming rings, an electronic control ring on the outside of RF Mount lenses gives fingertip rotational control over common camera functions like shutter, aperture, ISO and exposure compensation. No more digging in the menus.

At $2,299 each, the Canon RF 15-35mm F2.8 L IS USM and RF 24-70mm F2.8 L IS USM are also very bright for event photography. They feature a constant f/2.8 aperture throughout the zoom and there are several video features.

The Nano USM “Ultra Sonic Motor” has quieter autofocus than previous EF and EF-S lenses. There is also an adapter for those, the $249 Canon EOS RF mount adapter.
