You'll have to wait until the end of October to get the new version of ON1 Photo 10, the company's latest iteration of its software suite, but if you hurry and pre-order it by tomorrow (September 30), you'll get a discount and some cool freebies.

The latest version of this software, which is cross-platform compatible and can be used as a plug-in with Adobe Photoshop, Photoshop Elements, Lightroom and Apple Aperture, also functions as a standalone application. We haven't had hands-on experience with ON1 Photo 10 yet but the company promises performance that's up to four times faster, while also requiring less memory. New algorithms better utilize the latest video cards (GPUs), driving faster filter applications and more responsive sliders and tools.

Other improvements and updates include the ability to mask an entire filter stack inside of Effects rather than having to mask each individual filter that comprises a preset. You'll also find a more modern user interface with the ability to completely control the organization of your presets and preset categories.

When you're viewing and tagging/rating images, Photo 10 offers an optional auto-advance feature that, once you've finished rating a photo, brings you to the next image without having to use a drop down menu or a key to move forward.

A new haze reduction feature includes warm and cool options, with other presets to be added when it's released. Identifying faces for portrait retouching has been improved for accuracy. And, if you're into black-and-white conversion, you'll be happy to learn that ON1 has integrated its Perfect B&W module into Effects. This is more convenient than switching back and forth but more importantly, you'll benefit from the Effects options such as dynamic contrast, to further perfect your monochrome images.

And, if you're like me and tend to use sub-folders, Photo 10 offers an option to view the images in those folders automatically while you're browsing. With this feature turned on, you no longer have to drill down and open those sub-folders to view what's inside.

For more details about the updates—including Smart Albums and the ability to sync images between desktop and mobile iOS devices—visit the ON1 site. You'll also find more videos about the latest features at the ON1 blog.
