The beauty dish is a staple of portrait photography, helping you focus light to create dramatic images. If you’re new to using one or are looking for some pointers on how to master the beauty dish you already own, this video from photographer Joe Edelman is worth your time.

Beauty dishes range in size from 12 to 30 inches in diameter with either a silver finish (for harder light) or a white finish (for softer light). For Edelman, a white beauty dish in the 21- or 22-inch range is his go-to tool.

Using just a pair of speedlights and his own DIY beauty dish, Edelman walks you through a few lighting setups to get you started in beauty dish portraiture and shows you how to master your beauty dish.
