Tamron’s New Wide-Angle Zoom is Ultra Compact

Hailing it as the “smallest and lightest” wide-angle zoom lens in its class, Tamron’s new 17-35mm F/2.8-4 Di OSD (Model A037) full frame DSLR lens measures 3.5 inches in length and weighs 16.2 oz.

The lens has a minimum object distance of 11 inches with a magnification ratio of 1:4.9. It’s moisture resistant and features Fluorine coating on the front element to make it easier to clean.

There’s BBAR (Broad-Band Anti-Reflection) coating to minimize flare and ghosting and focusing is driven by an Optimized Silent Drive (OSD) which, as the name suggests, keeps AF noise to a minimum. According to Tamron, the OSD also improves AF speed and performance.

You’ll find a 7-blade diaphragm that stops down to f/16 (wide) to f/22 (tele). The lens is compatible with Tamron’s TAP-in Console for firmware updates and other lens adjustments.

Nikon shooters will have first access to the lens in September at a retail price of $599. Availability of the Canon mount version will be announced in the future.
