Nikon is readying an update to its 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6E ED VR lens, adding a stepping motor for improved AF performance and enhancing the Vibration Reduction.

The new full frame (FX format) lens doesn’t have a precise ship date just yet, but Nikon has spilled the beans on some key details. The lens can now deliver up to 4.5 stops of shake reduction, per CIPA standards. VR is available in Normal and Sport Mode.

Thanks to the addition of a stepping motor, the 70-300mm becomes Nikon’s first full frame AF-P lens (AF-P is the designation Nikon applies to its lenses with stepping motors).

Like all newer Nikkor lenses, the 70-300mm features an electronic diaphragm for consistent exposure control during high speed shooting and video recording. It can focus on objects as close as 3.9 feet with a magnification ratio of 0.25x. The lens is dust and moisture resistant and features a nine blade aperture.

The lens will cost $700 when it does hit store shelves. It is available for pre-order now.
