The mirrorless market is heating up at Photokina 2018.

At the show, a consortium of Leica, Panasonic and Sigma have announced plans to make products using Leica’s L mount.

The L Mount alliance, as it’s being called, will see Leica license its L mount standard to Panasonic and Sigma, which will be able to produce their own cameras and lenses using Leica’s mount. All products made by Alliance partners will be compatible across brands.

While it’s not an open standard, Leica says it is open to licensing it to other partners. Leica first introduced the L mount in its CL APS-C camera and later incorporated it in its TL line and full frame SL mirrorless camera. There are 13 L mount lenses on the market right now which can be used on both full frame and APS-C L-mount bodies.

The L Mount has a diameter of 51 millimeters and a flange distance of 20mm.

Specific product details from Sigma and Panasonic weren’t immediately available but the alliance has launched a website which they plan to update with further details.
