Lindsay Adler on How To Complement Posing with Lighting

Lindsay Adler is no stranger when it comes to pointers for posing and lighting in fashion and portrait photography—she gave us these tips for photographing a subject with a pronounced nose, and earlier this year she shared how lighting can enhance the drama in three different shoots. It seems only fitting that the New York-based photographer, educator and author dive into how to combine posing with lighting to complement one another.

Posing and lighting have to be particularly refined when it comes to boudoir photography, and that’s what Adler focuses on in this video (just in time for our July/August Posing issue, which has a special section on boudoir—stay tuned!). It’s far too easy to shoot an unflattering photo of someone in boudoir, simply because you have to carefully consider every angle and the placement of each part of the body—as Jen Rozenbaum can attest, with posing the hips comes an entire list of do’s and don’ts.

In this video, Adler uses one speed light (the FlashBender 2 XL Pro Lighting System) and a reflector (the 32-inch Rogue 2-in-1 Super Soft Silver/Natural White) to get the job done. She slowly builds in the light, adjusting the posing as she goes, slightly but purposefully, to demonstrate how to create a boudoir portrait that’s simple yet classic.
