RF Wedding of the Week: There Will Be Props—Mauro Cantelmi Photography

When it comes to following trends, photographer Mauro Cantelmi is unapologetic about his inclination to ignore them and do his own thing. Although candids are a staple of his wedding day coverage, he's most known for his use of props and extensive setups, which end up in his subsequent "art piece" albums for clients.

The tactic has worked: Cantelmi's studio Dezine by Mauro has been a fixture of the Australian wedding and portrait photography scene for more than 20 years, with locations in both Melbourne and Sydney.

The wedding between James and Megan is a good example of Cantelmi's style, which he calls "an avant-garde feel, and quite edgy." The ceremony was held at the groom’s parents home in the Melbourne suburb Toorak, with reception at The Peninsula Docklands Melbourne.

"This wedding was a very big wedding (450 guests), timing was restricted as the ceremony was quite late, which in turn didn’t allow much time for locations," Cantelmi says. "As this was a factor, we arranged for a location shoot a few days after the wedding to capture the more creative/fashion shots where we could incorporate our props, etc."

As for gear, Cantelmi used a variety, with the majority being Nikon. "I used the D4 with 70-200mm and the 35-70mm zoom," he says.

"The great thing about this couple is that they had great trust in me and my team," Cantelmi says. "They were most inspired by my work and also our albums — with this trust they were able to relax and let us get creative."
