RF Wedding of the Week: An Antique Roadshow by Violet Short
November 13, 2014
I’m such a sucker for antique anything, it’s ridiculous (note to photographers: send me vintage weddings).
So when Violet Short, of Indianapolis, Indiana, sent me links to three different weddings, I was like, “Yeah, no brainer, I’ll take that one.”
Bride Maria, here in her antique lace gown with peach accents set against the backdrop of Laurel Hall (which was built in 1916), is like my period film fantasy come to life.
(Oh, what, you’re sick of bridal portraits? Too bad.)
Luckily Short shares my enthusiasm about this wedding: “When I first met Maria and Sangbin [the groom], I came home from our consultation SO pumped and so hoping that they would choose me to be their photographer,” she says. “Maria showed me a sneak peek at her antique wedding gown and my jaw hit the floor! Their wedding planning was a mix of antique elegance and European inspiration.”
As for photographic challenges, Short says there were few: “Thankfully my bride was very aware of good lighting and made things easy for myself and my second shooter, Jean. With a chance of rain and high temperatures, the day turned out perfectly without a drop of rain hindering any picture time.”
For equipment, Short toted with her a Nikon D800 and backup camera, and several lenses—35mm 1.4, 85mm 1.8, 20mm 2.8, 135mm 2.0, and an 80mm tilt shift lens.
As for her wedding photography philosophy, Short keeps it simple: “I take a lifestyle approach with my photography, being most inspired by real life moments, beautiful sunsets and all things nostalgic. I try to capture all my images using predominately natural light, sunset or ‘the golden hour’ (my personal favorite).”
