RF Wedding of the Week: A Frank Lloyd Wright Home Wedding by Clay Austin

August 28, 2013

By Laura Brauer

One of the primary reasons we started Wedding of the Week was to find and showcase both established as well as emerging wedding photographers. In business a year and a half, Charleston, S.C.-based photographer Clay Austin fits that bill, and with that we share a colorful wedding he shot at Kentuck Knob, a Frank Lloyd Wright-designed house in the rural town of Chalk Hill, Pennsylvania.

“I love to shoot outdoors and always look for ways to incorporate my surroundings into each frame,” Clay writes in his bio.

When asked what made this particular wedding special, Clay says: “For starters, the location was UNREAL! The first time I walked up to the ceremony spot it was near impossible to not start singing ‘the hills are alive…’ and channel your inner Julie Andrews. Also, being a Frank Lloyd Wright estate, you couldn’t help but feel inspired by the sheer beauty of not only the house, but also the sculpture gardens that surround it. It’s not often that you get the chance to work with an English-style phone booth in the middle of a field. I also really loved working with the couple. They were incredibly kind and definitely shared an unmistakable love for each other.”

For equipment, Clay used a Canon 5D Mark II, lenses including a 24-105mm, 70-200mm, 17-40mm and 35mm, plus a 580EXII Speedlite.

Clays says one of the biggest trend he sees in his weddings is “Southern Charm.” “Most of my clients choose venues that feature beautiful old oak tree canopies with the Spanish moss blowing in the wind and colorful straws poking out of glasses of sweet tea. I had a client last year that made the boutonnieres out of sweet grass, which I loved!”
