When it came time for this couple to choose a wedding photographer to document their nuptials, Jeni and Brad’s wedding planner, Katherine Brown of Gather Together, pointed to North Carolina-based shooter Adam Chapin. “They said they were drawn to a more artistic take on true moments,” she told him. “I immediately thought of you and your aesthetic. I also knew you’d be a great personality fit for them. They are a very relaxed and kind couple—I felt you would put them at ease and would be able to draw out their personalities naturally.”

This was proven from the very first call they had. “The conversation went perfectly,” Chapin recalls. “We chatted about their wedding day, which would be held at The Cookery in Durham, North Carolina, and they would be getting ready at the 21c Museum Hotel. I was super excited about both venues, but especially about 21c,” which doubles as a contemporary art gallery and features an old bank vault in the basement. “I knew we would have some time to make some photos in the gallery space and vault, which is always fun! Anyway, Jeni was laughing at all of my stupid jokes and we hit it off immediately.”

Weddings tend to be happy occasions, Chapin acknowledges, but there was something about this one that stuck out. “What really kept hitting that home for me was hearing Jeni laugh,” he says. “And you didn’t only notice this when you were right around her, because she laughed so fully that you could hear her from across the room during the reception. You couldn’t help but to laugh or smile with her when you heard it, it was just so genuine!”

There weren’t a whole lot of obstacles for Chapin throughout the day, aside from the sliding children on the dance floor. “They were having a blast running onto the dance floor and seeing how far they could slide, so I suppose the challenge was keeping the sliders in your periphery at all times unless you wanted to be accidentally taken out.”
