It can sound exotic, rare and expensive, but according to a study published by The Knot earlier this year, one in five nuptials is a destination wedding. That figure is actually slightly down from 2011, a dip that may reflect the fact that destination weddings are more about creating a once-in-a-lifetime experience for the couple and guests, says Chelsea LaFollette, co-owner of Brilliant Event Planning in New York.
