This bride and groom asked Claire Penn to shoot their wedding just three weeks before they were set to exchange vows. As photographers know, this is not a recommended amount of time to find your dream photographer—but Penn made an exception.

“On my contact form, I ask brides/grooms to-be to describe their wedding in three words,” the UK-based Rf 30 Rising Star (2014) says. “Katinka’s were ‘relaxed, timely, winging it,’ and as soon as I read that and the rest of her beautifully written message describing how they met (so romantic) and their plans for the day, I knew I just had to squeeze their wedding in despite being fully booked for the year.”

Following a small ceremony at a library with just a few family members in attendance, they headed down to the bride’s father’s boathouse where lunch would be served, at the edge of Lake Ullswater in the Lake District. It was a “warm but misty October day,” as Penn describes it, “with nothing but the odd boat and some swans gracefully drifting by. I knew I wanted to try and capture the beauty and stillness of the location, so there was really only one spot for it: the old wooden jetty. But then, I can rarely resist a jetty!”

She shot this with her Canon 5D Mark III and Sigma 35mm lens at f/1.8, 1/3200th of a second and ISO 100.
