The Scale of a Portrait

On the coast in the Basque Country of Spain, the area is known for its flysch—layers of sedimentary rock that lay in striking diagonals. This little beach, Sakoneta, is where this couple had one of their first dates, so when they hired photographer Mick Habgood for a couples session, it became the perfect spot to return to.

“We still had an hour or so before sunset and the light was still too intense to shoot in the sun,” Habgood explains, “so I started by taking photos within the open shade and I just loved the perspective of this shot. They stood just enough in the light to illuminate themselves, and with the incredible light hitting the side of the rock, you can really see the depth changes within it. We’re all just little ants amongst a big, beautiful world, aren’t we?”

(Shot with a Canon 5D Mark IV and 35mm f/1.4 lens at f/1.4, 1/1600 sec. and ISO 100.)
