It was playtime for the kids as the adults finished up their meals during this reception, which took place in a converted barn at a rural venue in the UK. Speeches were up next on the day’s event lineup, so photographer Kim Gribbon of The Gribbons (which he runs with his wife, Chantelle) was getting himself ready for the toasts when he got distracted by these four fun-loving youngsters running around. “Shoes missing, shirts untucked—they were chasing each other around wildly,” he recalls.

Just as he got his lens ready to capture their little adventures, the fun was interrupted by their parents, who were asking them to keep the noise down and come back to the tables. “It’s the sheepish looks on their faces, the toys to the left of the frame that were discarded in a hurry, the kid with his hand behind his head, shirt untucked and lifting slightly, that I like the most about this photograph,” Gribbon says. “This was the moment the fun ended.”

To capture their movement, Gribbon boosted his ISO and opened up the aperture. He also kneeled down to get a better angle for the shot. “Perspective is important when photographing kids. Shooting down at them usually feels condescending—they are small people in an adult world, so I find it helps to get down on the same level.”

(Captured with a Canon 5D Mark III and a 35mm 1.4 L lens at ISO 3200 f/2.2 and 1/320 of a second.)
