The Little Explorer

It was a cloudy day at Ocean Beach in San Francisco when photographer Yiqian Barba of Luma Photography decided to take a walk with her eldest son Will, pictured here. “He will be starting kindergarten in the fall,” she says, “so we want to take advantage of the free time before we become bound to a schedule.”

The overcast skies meant that mother and son could share some alone time on what’s usually a crowded beach. Even the low tide let her capture a rare moment with no surfers in the background—the perfect backdrop for Barba to also test out her new 24mm lens. “We were able to walk out really far,” the photographer recalls. “As newcomers to the Bay Area, it’s great that we can just go outside and explore as much as possible.”
