The Documentary Approach

London-based photographer Liam Smith thrives on documenting moments as they happen, with absolutely zero intervention. “There’s a purity to this approach that I’ve always been drawn to because it allows an individual’s personality, mannerisms and gestures to be captured,” he explains. “The end result is a collection of pictures that the clients recognize as themselves. How they interact, show affection and how they love each other is entirely unique, and being able to show that to them is a fantastic thing.”

Smith particularly loves this image, of the father of the bride reading a letter written to her by her mother, who had passed away. The photographer couldn’t help but cry along with everyone. “It was one of the most beautiful moments I’ve ever witnessed,” he says, “and this frame will forever remind me of how I felt in that moment. That is what I want my photographs to do for my clients, to be able to tap into the emotion they felt at the time, whether it be pure joy or a deep sadness.”
