The Depths of Light

The Longwood Gardens fountain exhibit in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania, had been newly renovated when photographer Kelli Wilke visited its grotto. Looking around, she visualized this shot almost immediately. So, when a newly engaged couple got in touch for a session, Wilke knew just where to take them for portraits.

After centering the couple with the grotto’s water feature, Wilke positioned a speedlight, fitted with a MagMod grid, behind them and angled it up toward them and the water. “I wanted to backlight the water a bit to be able to see it but also put them in silhouette,” Wilke explains. “I did very little post-processing, but I did enhance the blue in the ceiling waterfall area.”

All told, Wilke says, this is one of her favorite spots for a photo shoot.
