Wedding photographers Seth and Beth are based in Ohio, where the scenery can often be “very flat,” Seth says, and “at times uninteresting.” Since evolving their lighting style for group photos (like composited groomsmen portraits), the duo has become accustomed to creating cool portrait scenes—often in backlit silhouette—with minimal resources. Recently, they did so at a military wedding when all they had was a muddy cow pasture.

“Joe and his groomsmen wanted a killer shot,” Seth recalls. They were outside at noon and, looking around them, all he saw was a newly built hotel and a hill. “This ‘hill’ was a pile of dirt in a construction zone,” Seth clarifies, “and the boys were hesitant to climb up it. But they were stoked to see the product!”
