Race to the Wedding Dress

Paul Woo is no stranger to this venue, a hotel in Columbus, Ohio, having photographed a number of weddings here before. He already knew just where to hang the wedding dress and where to stand to capture it, from across the atrium. But for this wedding, he wanted to challenge himself; he wanted to think outside of the box and do things a little differently. He just wasn’t quite sure when or how that would happen. But when the moment arrived, he was ready.

This wedding day started out just like any other, with the getting-ready process going as planned, when suddenly, this eager bride began sprinting across the hallway, near where her dress was hung up. Woo immediately saw this shot and got his camera ready. “It was the moment I had been waiting for,” he says.

Woo usually captures a few frames of the bride looking down at the dress for posed portraits, but this was something a little different. With its documentary approach and captivating composition, Woo’s image impressed the judges in Rangefinder‘s 2018 Wedding competition and earned first-place honors in the Wedding Details category. Says Woo, “I’m glad I was able to capture a unique story and put a human element into the frame.”
