George Kusumose of G n V Photography wanted a relaxed, natural family photo for this portrait session, one that would really evoke the love between them.

Even though the session was approaching the evening hours, the sun was still pretty strong. To deal with this harsh light, Kusumose had them face away from it, with the rays at their backs, so that he could properly expose for their faces.

And to capture them interacting naturally and peacefully, Kusumose asked them not to look at the camera as the father told them a story, hoping that would usher in an intimate and engaging scene between the family of five. “Then this graceful frame came up,” says Kusumose, who clicked the shutter just as one of the daughters couldn’t help but peek over at him. The photographer also overexposed one stop on his camera to counteract the harsh shadows.
