Big Sur, California, is a popular destination for wedding portraits, and it’s no wonder why—the surroundings are absolutely breathtaking. But even with beautiful environs, photographers can feel the itch to shake things up and shoot something a little different.

That’s what Tyler Branch did for this shot of Jimmy and Amanda. “The light was somewhat harsh with it being near midday, so I figured I’d put them in direct light while exposing for the highlights,” Branch explains. “It made for a pretty cool look with the darkness of the forest and trees around them.” Rather than revealing the entire scene, the California-based photographer whittled it down to the absolute essentials: the couple’s faces, peeks at the dress and suit, and just a hint of their surroundings.

(Shot with a Canon 5D Mark III and a 35mm f/1.4L at f/4, 1/6400th of a second and ISO 160.)
