Cold weather was on the menu during this past spring break in Saskatchewan, Canada. For local photographer Ashley Soeder, that meant that her kids got to burn off all of their energy indoors and that she could photograph them in the comfort of their own home.

It was early afternoon when Soeder gave her youngest daughter a bed sheet to play with. “I told her she was free to jump around on the bed, so she jumped, twirled and fell backward over and over,” she says. That gave Soeder the time she needed to set up her camera and capture the shot she wanted.

“I knew I wanted to freeze the action, and I was hoping the sheet would help to frame her,” she explains. She set her shutter speed to 1/2000 of a second and used the back-button focus to capture her daughter’s quick movement.

“I love that she is almost floating just above the window sill and right in the middle of the frame surrounded by the bed below her and the sheet above her,” Soeder says. “I feel like it truly captures her fun and playful spirit.”
