What happens when you have a wedding guest that doesn’t like to have their picture taken? It can be a challenge, says photographer Maja Jokić, who captured this goofy moment of the bride’s camera-shy stepfather during a recent wedding in Hvar Island, Croatia. “It was a bummer,” Jokić recalls, especially since this particular guest was a key part of the wedding, but luckily he was able to make light of the situation.
“My favorite part of this frame is that it is both sincere and goofy—he’s holding this fan in one hand as his own weapon of choice to hide behind while clasping a petal holder in the other,” Jokić says. “I think that one of the most unwanted scenarios every wedding photographer faces is uncooperative guests. When someone doesn’t want to be photographed, what can you do? You just have to respect that, and I think I managed that here, while still making this fun portrait of someone who is important to the bride and groom.”
