This bride getting ready at the Soho Grand Hotel in New York was “loosely posed,” says Judy Pak. “I had asked her to put on shoes by the window and photographed her as it happened naturally.” And as it so happened, Pak captured a moment with great directionality—the curve of the lamp guides your eye to the bride’s face, whose gaze at her outstretched arm leads you to the hand, touching her shoe. Each shape and line tells a story, which isn’t always easy to do.

Shot with her Contax 645 using an 80mm lens, Pak relied on natural light for this shot. “Find an area with the most flattering light and place your subject there,” she advises, “then try shooting different angles to get to your desired result. It may not be the most obvious angle that works best for you!”
