As a photographer, you never know when inspiration might strike. For California-based shooter Barbara Hazen, the idea for her human figure series came about during a conversation with her daughter. “She asked me several personal questions including, ‘Do you think you are pretty?'” Hazen recalls. “That question tapped into my deep insecurities about myself, and I began photographing the female figure.”

This photo is from Hazen’s second human figure project called “Genuine Beauty,” which earned her a first-place award in Rangefinder‘s The Body competition. It was created as a personal project to experiment with lighting, creativity and the female figure. The full series can be found on Hazen’s website and includes images with and without props. “As a creative, it was challenging to move forward with a new shoot when previous props or models did not work out,” she says of the process. “However, not doing so would have been death to this series.”
