This family hopped in the car and drove from their home in Utah up to Oregon to have a photo session with Gina Paulson. The day they set out for Cannon Beach together, the sun was shining and there wasn’t a cloud in the sky, but the sea breeze was still pretty chilly.

“I love moments of families playing together, especially with kids,” Paulson says. Here, she photographed continuously as the father swung his daughter around in a circle, using the huge boulder behind them to cut the sun’s flare. “This was taken at 7 p.m.,” Paulson explains, “so the sun was on its way down but still very bright. As I shot, I played with my positioning on how much of that sun to let into the frame.”
