Brazil-based photographer Rony Hernandes started this photo shoot in the way that many photographers do: by taking time to get to know his subject. “The concept for this photograph came after a conversation with the model about his life,” Hernandes says. “My job is to show emotion, and there’s nothing better than a deep conversation about what a person is feeling to get that result.”

Once Hernandes had a vision for the type of imagery he wanted to create, he says the actual execution of the images was straightforward. “The ideas were already there before we began shooting,” he notes. But there was one artistic element in this final frame that Hernandes believes elevates the overall portrait. “My favorite part about this shot is the blurred plane, which puts more emphasis on the reflection of the model.”
