Eye-Catching Portraits and Photos of the Week
December 5, 2022
This week, we feature the work of five photographers who were inspired by stylized photo shoots, magnificent props, and the beauty of the landscape they were in.
Keith Cephus says this “Victorian Goddess” image was a collaboration of creatives for a wedding venue called the Mamba Room in Norfolk, Virginia. Celebrity stylist Elizabeth Paschall, Cephus says, created an illustrious head piece to depict a garden fantasy.
“My objective from a photographer’s perspective was to create an image that was timeless with Victorian panache,” Cephus explains. “The lighting used to create this high-key image was two StellaPro CLx’s. The main light was bounced through a large white umbrella and the other light was positioned behind the model to create the high key effect.”

Anna Rowland of Luna Weddings in the UK says that groom Alex (below) is a famous comedian from Mexico, and bride Yara is a talented photographer. “They found me on Instagram and booked me for their Iceland elopements,” Rowland explains.
“I love this image because despite being at the mighty Skógafoss waterfall in Iceland, the light behind us was just magical,” she adds. “The sun is starting to set and the spray from the falls was backlit; this photo was taken just after Alex and Yara had taken their vows and were very emotional. I love that the spray has created a bokeh effect on the lens.”

About this next shot, also by Rowland of Alex and Yara, the photographer says it was the second day with the couple and this time they were at Reynisfjara beach in Iceland. She says she just loved going past the obvious focus of “these basalt columns and instead focusing on the dark shadows to the side. I love how the veil falls into place with the shapes.”
Jessica McKnight says the next two shots were taken at a private location in Miami, Florida, and was inspired by the Star Wars location Tatooine, a “sparsely inhabited circumbinary desert planet located in the galaxy’s Outer Rim Territories,” according to Wookiepedia.
“I loved how creative the project was and that I was able to have full creative control, from wardrobe and prop design to coordinating the location,” says McKnight of these stylized photo shoots. “I also loved that it utilized off-camera flash and I loved that my model was into the session and embraced her role/character.”

During bridal prep for this wedding below, taken in Alicante, Spain, photographer Phil Salisbury noticed a window looking out over the ceremony space (below) that, from a certain vantage point, he thought would capture a strong composition of the couple during their ceremony.
“It would incorporate the sensational colors of the sea in the background complimenting the bride’s white dress and bringing the scene for the viewer together to show where the couple were to recite their vows,” he says.
